From the Fillmore to the Hall of Fame.
Born in Louisiana, Clarence Sims came west in 1955 and took his stage name from San Francisco’s Fillmore District, where he played the clubs. He opened for B.B. King and Dinah Washington, cut records under several names, and later made Born to Sing the Blues (1987) and albums for Fedora.
He was one of the voices of the Hughes brothers’ 1999 documentary American Pimp, entered the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame in 2008, and is still on the bill in San Francisco.
